"SHOWPIECE" (2024)- HRT packaging, wire, thread, paper mache, plastic tarp, lighting gels acryllic paint
SHOWPIECE (initially developed for Concrete Boom 3 in December 2024) utilizes the aesthetic language of mid-century big bug films to articulate the experiences of transgender and intersex people after the turn of the 21st century. Contemporary political debate surrounding “transgender issues” is eerily, near comically, similar to the Anita Bryant era panic surrounding homosexual social contagion of the 1970s, and this rhetoric matches the inflammatory scripts of movies like Them (1954) or Tarantula (1955). Trans people, like insects, are an inherent part of the natural world towards which many are taught a disgust response. In an era in which trans people are the eternal scapegoat, SHOWPIECE provides a raw, rageful transsexual retort. This is a work in progress
"T-Gel Mantis" (2023)- Testosterone packaging, wire, thread, acryllic paint
The "T-Gel Mantis" is a marrionette made entirely out of the packaging from the artist's hormone replacement thearapy (HRT). This puppet is the first in a proposed series of insect puppets made from transgender ephemera- a project that intends to highlight the moral panic around transness in the United States and elsewhere.
